Port worker strike expected to impact Wisconsin

Wisconsin grocery shoppers should not see an immediate impact from the longshoremen’s strike, but experts say it’s only a matter of time. Michael Childers teaches labor relations at the UW-Madison School of Business. In an interview with 27 News, he said automation is a common point of contention in union negotiations. However, workers and management can generally agree on when and where new technology is used. “The technology is being used to essentially outsource the work that they (longshoremen) used to do in terms of the checking in of trucks before they’re allowed onto the dock,” Childers said. “And I think that’s, again, part of what they’re trying to to get in this new negotiation.”
