Associate Professor Kulwiec Examines the Health of the U.S. Meat Processing System

Associate Professor Alexia Kulwiec‘s essay “Give Meat a Chance” was featured in Food Safety News on June 8, 2020. Kulwiec examines the U.S. meat supply and how current systems are not healthy for workers, stability of the food supply, or local producers.

To date, while safety of meat produced has improved, the meat processing system itself, broadly speaking, is failing to meet the needs of American consumers. The past month in the United States has demonstrated that consolidation has led to a serious vulnerability in U.S. meat production as well as compromised safety and health of the meat processing workforce.
