We are saddened to share the news that Maurice Better, a former faculty member of the School for Workers, passed away on February 18, 2026.
Maurice’s career with the School for Workers followed an impressive academic journey, including an advanced degree in labor economics from UW–Madison. He joined the University Extension School for Workers as an Assistant Professor, later earning promotion to Full Professor in 1996. His teaching and program leadership supported labor union members across Wisconsin, covering topics such as contract negotiations, steward training, grievance handling, arbitration, and local union administration. He was also the author of the well-received Contract Bargaining Handbook for Local Union Members (1993).
Maurice’s dedication to labor education, his students, and the broader community leaves a meaningful legacy. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, colleagues, and all who were touched by his life and work.
For those wishing to read more or share condolences, his full obituary is available through Cress Funeral & Cremation Services.
